What is Male Alopecia? Why is it triggered?

  • Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) / Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL): 

Androgenetic alopecia happens because hair follicles slowly shrink over time, transforming thick, healthy "terminal hairs" into thin, soft "vellus hairs". This occurs because the anagen (growth) phase gets shorter, while the telogen (resting) phase becomes longer. The key hormone involved is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a testosterone derivative formed by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. In genetically predisposed men, DHT binds to androgen receptors in scalp follicles, driving this miniaturization process (Wang et al. 2024; Ho et al. 2023). 


  • Telogen Effluvium (Temporary Diffuse Shedding): 

A condition of temporary hair loss characterized by sudden, widespread thinning across the entire scalp due to severe physical or mental stress, sudden nutritional deficiencies (such as iron or protein deficits), or acute illness shocks (Ho et al. 2023). 


  • Alopecia Areata (Autoimmune Hair Loss): 

A condition causes sudden, patchy hair loss that usually leaves smooth, round bald spots on the scalp. This is generally caused by malfunctioning immune systems, and can be worsened by extreme psychological stress, underlying systemic illness, or genetic immune susceptibilities (Sibbald, 2023).
